ITM readers in or near DC, mark your calendars: on Friday November 7 the newly formed GW Medieval and Early Modern Studies Institute (GW MEMSI) will sponsor its first symposium, "Touching the Past." Four scholars will be presenting on the theme: Peggy McCracken, Eileen Joy, Julian Yates, and Carolyn Dinshaw.
The event is free and welcomes anyone who would like to attend. Details in the early autumn.
PS: I'm also pleased to announce that GW MEMSI will be sponsoring a panel at Kalamazoo 2009: "How to Get the Medieval Studies You Want: Institutional Perspectives." Presenting at this round table will be Bonnie Wheeler, Stephanie Trigg, Carolyn Dinshaw, Ethan Knapp, Malcolm Litchfield, and the ubiquitous Eileen Joy.
Sounds great. I might actually be able to make it up from the wilds of SW VA, since I'm scheduled to be at the Haskins Conference at Georgetown that same weekend. My guess, however, is that my panel will be at the exact same time...

ReplyDeleteI had a dream last night where I came to the stunning realization that just about everything worthwhile in current theoretical approaches went back to the works of Philip K. Dick, and as someone who read all of Dick before the age of 22, I was well qualified to make a contribution.
Well, it made for an interesting dream.

ReplyDeleteSteve: you're a genius. Seriously. For the first time ever, I taught Phillip K. Dick last year ["The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch" and "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep"--we also read William Gibson's "Neuromancer"], and the thing is, I think you're on to something. Now, throw in some Haruki Maurakami, and you're really on to something.

ReplyDeleteI have no particular preference of transport so long as it's in the $80 or so or less range.....I'll see if Nicola wants to go too. W/ 4 people it might make sense to rent a car, unless we want to keep our $ reserved to buy Eileen drinks.
