2 MLA observations

(1) This meeting of academics has to be the most concentrated gathering of people sporting "cool" (expensive, sleek, ostentatious) eye glasses that ever unfolds anywhere at any time.

(2) It is slightly unnerving to be surrounded by people who look vaguely like you, reminding you that you are not so much an individual as a type.

Next time, I'm wearing a cape.

And speedos. (multiple pairs)

Hmm, not sure I want to see that.

Here is an MLA vignette.

Was riding in the elevator of the Embassy Suites with Kid #2. A father and his young son entered, the latter with very messy blond hair. "That Sam-I-Am! That Sam-I-Am!"yells Kid #2. The father turns to me and asks "Dr Suess?" "Sort of," I explain. "Your son has blond hair that reminds my daughter of her 'boyfriend,' her brother's pal Sam. You have to be able to crack the secret language."

"Oh," mumbles the father. "It's part of her ideolect."
